Smart Metering installs primary and secondary utility meters: gas, water and electricity. In gas, for example, meter installations and exchanges range from U6 domestic meters to U16 commercial meters and rotary meters for major gas users.
Primary meters – also known as fiscal meters – are those used by utilities to bill customers.
Secondary meters – also known as sub-meters – are meters installed by end users to better measure and control energy and water consumption across a large site. For example, a manufacturer using a substantial amount of gas, electricity and water could install secondary meters to enable it to accurately allocate costs across different products and/or production units. Secondary meters also assist in the early identification of leakage and wastage.
There is general consensus across political parties that domestic water metering has a significant role to play in reducing water demand. This is particularly true in areas of water scarcity. Smart Metering is ideally placed to assist water utilities with their meter installation programmes.
Smart Metering closely monitors changes in the regulatory environment relating to utility meters.
